To survive, the modern Republican Party will have to accept the fact that while a large share of its voters are religious people, a growing share (especially among younger Republicans) do not have as deep ties to a religious tradition. In other words, the religious right’s hold on the modern Republican Party is weakening with each election cycle.
In comparison, the share of Democrats who participated weekly decreased by only five percentage points (from 23% to 18%) during the same period. By 2022, this figure had fallen to just 35%.
